USB Flash Drive (System Storage)
Dune Blu-ray players (Dune BD Prime, Dune HD Center, Dune HD Base, Dune HD
Base 2.0, Dune BD Prime 3.0, Dune HD Base 3.0) may utilize a dedicated USB
flash drive, called "System Storage", to provide certain player functions,
depending on the particular player model/revision and particular firmware
version.
For V3.0 Dune player models (Dune BD Prime 3.0, Dune HD Base 3.0):
The System Storage is required to use the following player functions:
- So called "Blu-ray Local Storage" utilized by some Blu-ray discs.
- Some Blu-ray discs (e.g. those using Blu-ray Profile 1.1/2.0,
BD Live, Bonus View, BD-J) may require the presence of the Blu-ray
Local Storage (especially when BD-Live functions are used and bonus
content from Internet is downloaded).
- Since it may not be easy to predict in advance whether
particular Blu-ray discs require the Blu-ray Local Storage, it is
recommended to ensure that the System Storage is available when
playback of Blu-ray discs is performed.
- User-defined top-level menus of Internet Radio stations and IPTV
channels.
- NOTE: The 3.0 models do not require the System Storage to use
"Extra Applications" (which include SMB server application), all
applications are preinstalled into the main flash memory of the units.
For V1.0 and V2.0 Dune player models (Dune BD Prime, Dune HD Center, Dune
HD Base, Dune HD Base 2.0):
Starting with the firmware version 081226_1216_update1, the System
Storage is required to use the following player functions:
- So called "Extra Applications", which include:
- User-defined top-level menus of Internet Radio stations and IPTV
channels.
NOTE: you do not need the System Storage if you do not need the listed
above player functions, dependent on the System Storage.
NOTE: Depending on a particular player model/revision, the player may
either have a built-in USB flash drive installed inside the player (and
typically preconfigured as the System Storage at the factory), or allow the
user to attach an external USB flash drive and configure it to be used as
the System Storage. Check SETUP / Information / System Storage to see if
your player has the System Storage attached and configured.
Initialization.
To start using a USB flash drive as the System Storage, it should be
initialized by the player. To initialize a USB flash drive as the System
Storage, perform the following steps:
- Attach an empty USB flash drive (256MB minimum, 1GB+ recommended)
to the player.
- Ensure there are no other empty drives attached to the player (and
no attached drives have empty partitions on them).
- Launch a .DFF file corresponding to the currently installed
firmware version (put the .DFF file onto a separate media, e.g. another
USB drive). Download .DFF files here:
- The player will recognize the attached empty USB flash drive and
request a confirmation to use it as the System Storage. Confirm it.
- The player will initialize the USB flash drive as the System
Storage (the USB flash drive will be formatted into EXT3 filesystem and
a special data will be stored on the drive to mark it as the System
Storage).
- The usual firmware installation procedure will be performed. During
firmare installation, if Extra Applications are supported/required by
the player model, Extra Applications will be automatically installed
into the System Storage USB flash drive.
- After successful firmware intallation and player rebooting, the
player will use the USB flash drive as the System Storage and will
enable the corresponding player functions.
NOTE: It is also possible to initialize System Storage in an easier way,
w/o the need to reinstall the firmware, using a special service file.
Please see the section "Service Files for Working with
System Storage" below. Using a service file is recommended way for 3.0
models. For 1.0/2.0 models, the standard way (firmware reinstallation) is
recommended.
Usage rules.
Rules for working with the System Storage USB flash drive:
- Always keep the System Storage USB flash drive permanently attached
to the player.
- Ensure the System Storage USB flash drive is attached to the player
before switching the player on.
- Never detach the System Storage USB flash drive from the player
when the player is switched on (even if the player is in standby mode).
Switch off the player completely before detaching the System Storage
USB flash drive from the player.
- The current status of the System Storage (attached/detached, used
space) can be seen in SETUP / Information menu.
- Never attach the System Storage USB flash drive to a PC and
access/modify its content via a PC or any other device.
- If the System Storage content is broken for any reason (e.g.
accidentally deleted when connecting the System Storage USB flash drive
to a PC), you can reinitialize it by launching a .DFF file
corresponding to the currently installed firmware version.
- When you install another firmware version via a .DFF file and the
System Storage is attached to the player, the firmware components
stored in the System Storage (Extra Applications) are automatically
updated.
- If you install another firmware version via a .DFF file when the
the System Storage is not attached the the player, and then you attach
the System Storage, Extra Applications may not work properly; in such a
case, you will need to reinstall the .DFF file again to update Extra
Applications.
- System Storage USB drive is not listed in the main menu of the
player.
- If you want to stop using a USB drive as the System Storage,
detatch it from the player and reformat it via a PC.
Advanced usage.
You can also use an individual partition of a USB flash drive or a HDD (USB
HDD, e-SATA HDD, or internal HDD) as System Storage. To do it, just make
the corresponding partition empty (and make it the only empty partition)
and perform the System Storage initialization procedure described above.
Then follow the rules for working with System Storage described above in
the usual way.
Service files for working with System Storage.
You can also use the following service files ("DSF" files) for initializing
System Storage and performing other operations on System Storage:
-
dune_service_init_system_storage.dsf
- Initializes System Storage on an empty USB flash drive (or an
already existing empty HDD partition), w/o reinstalling the
firmware.
- NOTE: Recommended for 3.0 models only. Not recommended for
1.0/2.0 models (using this service on 1.0/2.0 models will correctly
initialize System Storage, but will not install Extra Applications;
Extra Applications can only be installed by updating/reinstalling
the firmware).
- NOTE: The USB flash drive (or an existing HDD partition)
intended to become System Storage must be empty (and this USB flash
drive or HDD partition must be the only empty storage attached to
the player). If it is not empty, delete all files from it or
reformat it first (e.g. using the player built-in format function:
choose USB flash drive or HDD partition in the main menu, press
INFO RC button, choose "Format Partition"). Do not put this service
file to the USB flash drive you want to become System Storage; use
some other USB flash drive for storing this service file!
-
dune_service_make_system_storage_on_hdd_partition.dsf
- Reformats am empty HDD to two partitions, and initializes
System Storage on one of these partitions, w/o reinstalling the
firmware.
- NOTE: Using this service on 1.0/2.0 models will correctly
initialize System Storage, but will not install Extra Applications;
Extra Applications can be installed later by updating/reinstalling
the firmware.
- NOTE: The HDD intended to be reformatted by this service must
be empty and must contain just single partition or no partitions at
all (and this HDD must be the only such a HDD attached to the
player). If it is not empty or contains several partitions,
reformat it first (e.g. using the player built-in format function:
choose HDD in the main menu, press INFO RC button, choose "Format
Disk").
- NOTE: This service reformats the HDD to two partitions (one
using 2GB and second using the rest of HDD), and initializes the
first 2GB partition as System Storage. The second partition is NOT
formatted by this service; if you want to format it (and you
probably do), you can format it e.g. using the player built-in
format function: choose the HDD in the main menu, press INFO RC
button, choose "Format Partition").
dune_service_format_system_storage.dsf
- Completely reformats an already attached System Storage.
- NOTE: All data stored on System Storage (including Blu-ray
Local Storage data, Extra Applications (for 1.0/2.0 models), and
content of Internet Radio and IPTV folders on the main menu will be
lost!
- NOTE: Using this service on 1.0/2.0 models will correctly
initialize System Storage, but will not install Extra Applications;
Extra Applications can be installed later by updating/reinstalling
the firmware.
dune_service_clear_bluray_local_storage.dsf
- Clears all Blu-ray Local Storage data, keeping all other data
(if any) stored on System Storage.
- NOTE: It is recommended to use this service if you encounter
any problems with Blu-ray playback to restore correct player
operation; sometimes, Blu-ray playback problems can be caused by
inconsistent or damaged Blu-ray Local Storage data. If this does
not help to eliminate the problems, you can also try to completely
reformat System Storage (in some cases, this also may help).
dune_service_deinit_system_storage.dsf
- Deinitializes an already attached System Storage. The currently
attached System Storage becomes the usual storage that can be
accessed and browsed via the player menu in the usual way.
- NOTE: After deinitializing System Storage, the resulting
storage will typically contain various system files (will not be
empty). To reinitialize this storage as System Storage again, you
will need first to delete all these files or reformat it.
